What if you could power up your music study by adding one hour (or even one half hour) to your practice each week? That’s right not each day, each week.
I call it the “Power Hour,” and it can help you focus your work, eliminate unnecessary repetition, multiply your practice results and streamline your path to progress. Plus your next lesson will be a great one.
1. A pencil with an eraser. Yes, even in this digital age, and even if your teacher has them there.
2. A notebook with plenty of room for you (or your teacher) to make notes.
3. A listening ear. Paying close attention to what your teacher has to say isn’t just polite, it’s a game changer for your harp playing!
For Parents
Encourage Responsibility
Very young music students need strong parental support to help them learn how to practice. Their skill in self-guided learning will develop as they grow. Encourage your harpist to take on a new level of responsibility for their practice as they are ready. It could be setting their practice schedule, or taking their own lesson notes, or tracking their practice in a practice log or journal. Encouraging them to be responsible at an appropriate level for their own progress is an important factor in their enjoyment of their music studies.
For Teachers
Establish Clear Practice Goals
Help your students to set specific, measurable, and achievable practice goals. Encourage them to break down larger objectives into smaller, manageable tasks. Tools like practice journals or goal-setting worksheets can help students organize their practice sessions. Teaching them how to use these tools will set them up for success - and lots of great lessons!
